The ReStoration
Bringing Niagara Back To Life
The Niagara Café was carefully brought back — shaped by the details that defined it.
The Niagara Café dates back to 1902, with a substantial Art Deco refurbishment in 1938. Today, it’s recognised by the National Trust (NSW) for its historic significance.
In 2021 and 2022, the café was carefully restored, with the original details restored throughout. From chrome finishes to booth seating, it was brought back with attention to detail and respect for its history.
The aim wasn’t just to reopen, but to honour the craftsmanship behind the space and keep it part of everyday life in Gundagai.

The Architects of a Legacy (1902 – 1983)
The Castrission Era
The Niagara story began in 1902, but it was the arrival of the Castrission family around 1916 that shaped what it would become. Over the decades, Jim, Vic and later Jack Castrission helped transform a simple refreshment room into one of Australia’s most recognised Greek cafés.
In 1938, the family unveiled the Art Deco café that still stands today, creating what became known as “Australia’s Wonder Café”. For more than 60 years, the Castrissions welcomed locals, travellers and generations of families, helping establish the Niagara as a landmark on the Hume Highway. More than a café, it became an important part of Gundagai’s story.

Keeping It Going (1983 – 2021)
The Loukissas Era
In 1983, the café was taken on by the Loukissas family, who continued its role as a meeting place for locals and travellers.
Over the years that followed, the Loukissas family maintained what had always defined the Niagara — a steady, familiar sense of hospitality. As times changed, it remained a trusted stop for road-trippers and regulars alike.
Their stewardship ensured the café stayed what it had always been — a place for a warm welcome, a good meal, and a classic milkshake.

The Next Chapter
Continuing the Story (2021 - Today)
When the current owners took on the Niagara in 2021, it wasn’t about creating something new — it was about caring for what was already here.
Having admired the café for years while travelling between Sydney and Melbourne, they recognised how rare it was to find such an intact example of a historic Greek café. Their focus became preserving what made the Niagara special while ensuring it could continue serving future generations.
Across 2021 and 2022, extensive restoration work carefully revived many of the café’s original Art Deco features. From chrome finishes to booth seating, every effort was made to honour the building’s history while returning it to everyday use.
Today, the Niagara remains what it has always been — a place for locals, travellers, and anyone passing through.
